Interdisciplinarity
camilla buttarelli
Interdisciplinarity or network of complementarity, integration and interaction relationships, so different disciplines converge in common principles. Basically the union of disciplines is what brings us, thanks to experimentation, to progress. In the field of engineering, this kind of contamination has led to the development of new faculties, which in turn provide progress in the fields of science, medicine, astronomy ... I think that in every area interdisciplinarity is important, because the closure in ponds compartments has never led to advance in any field, especially scientific. What does multidisciplinarity mean for my work? Leaving the university with a degree and a laurel wreath on your head, you think of hanging the books on the nail and that most of the road has been done, but as soon as you enter the world of work you realize that what you thought is completely mistaken!! For a building engineer and architect, this is only the beginning. Meanwhile, the first choice to make is technical or art? Fortunately our course of study is so vast that you get to know the art of architecture through Mies and the science of technology with Saint-Venant, but at the same time the world of work is so selective that you can choose, on what you want to specialize. Unfortunately, life after university is not as expected, the job is not what we expected five years before, but still satisfactory. The conclusion of this path is that you never stop studying, learning and knowing. The engineer, however rigorous, balanced, precise and methodical it may be, is an abstract work. It is not like talking about any other job, whose duties are real, physical; engineer from Latin ingenium, is the complex of intellectual qualities or intelligence. His work has no established boundaries and his knowledge is manifold, therefore, what he proposes is to unite, not only the disciplines, but also the professional figures to arrive at a complex result. From the beginning of a construction process, many figures appear on the scene, starting with those involved in the award of the tender, to the architectural designers, structural engineers, installers, up to those who manage everything, or the project managers; already so, we note the multidisciplinarity of the building project, as each discipline necessarily implies the others, without which, the product would be, in the first case, a pure artistic experiment (architecture without technique) and in the second case, an environment without soul or idea (technique without architecture) lacking the genius loci. In a world in continuous progress and movement, in continuous evolution, in contact with different realities, multidisciplinarity is the contamination, understood with a positive meaning, of cultures, styles, languages and techniques that leads to exceptional results. Already in antiquity we used the term contamination to assert how a form of architecture had collected and assimilated foreign influences; in the 21st century, contamination is taking place thanks to globalization and also architecture (and construction) is influenced and influences in turn different areas, such as fashion, design, music, art ....
How does it feel to be a young professional? You feel small but strong, still not quite capable but with a great desire to continue learning and growing and creating something big; it feels powerful, because for the first time, our destiny is in our hands, and at the same time weak, because we also depend largely on others, on politics, on the economy, on the culture of our country. Until 70 years ago, women engineers were not many, and even today in some parts of the world, studying and having a role on the same level as men is not possible. Personally I do not know what my role is in the contemporary scene, I am a young professional who is still learning, but I know what I want it to be in the future, that is the coordination and management of the parts and professional figures in the construction processes, with particular regard to the energy, alternative construction and plant solutions.
I think this platform can offer numerous advantages, as it connects professionals from various fields and nationalities, so as to get to know their respective points of view and cultures. It will prove to be an interesting opportunity to exchange opinions and collaborations.
