Multidisciplinarity: a new approach to architecture

veronica strippoli

The architecture today is not an only matter but is a union of different features, dissimilar professions, we must think about the architectural project like a conjunction with more aspects of human life, all items that reflecting all life’s complexity. It’s not just a mix of culture, generations, gender or social class, but also an interdisciplinary method that take in consideration all aspect that characterise the human life. We refer to economics, social and philological topics that affects and influence the project choices. A network that in it contains all this different issue that have the in common the heart of architectural research: the human!

Since the beginning the human, whit all his topics, was in the middle of architectural questions and research and it affects the architectural choices and in reverse the architectural construct, whit his shapes, his shadows ... his beautiful and grandeur, touches the human feelings. So before thinking about concept and rest the pencil on the paper, the architect steps into the shoes of human, understanding his psychology, his feelings, his need and his wish, in connection with economics necessity. This approach to human questions is prior to think about the project concept, in-fact the architectural research starts with questions, on which the architect must find the answers to create the way of project. Every time he finds an answer or more answers, he can establish a project themes, however he must validate this dates whit the persons that live or use the project area. The participation of users is fundamental in the project process, because if the architectural propose reflects the human wishes and needs, the plan will be a winner project!

The participation of users in the architectural projects is a very important issues in the new architectural approach, the human is not just the centre of projects bus he is the driver of design choices. It’s important to establish a human map: a method that allow to users to participate into project. How? The first step is to identify the subjects, the users, they have to be a people of different social classes, different age and human that have different works and interest. In this way the project choices can reply to needs as much as possible. The second step is found a map of all questions to satisfy and choice the themes of projects, and validate the choices with users and start to define the project. In view of this the participated architecture result the right approach to realize a successful project. So that a project will be used by people, it must be hospitable, it shall transmit protection, it has to arouse good feelings in humans.

The first component that make the architecture a safety place is the light and another important ingredient of project, that help to be a place homely, is the colour. The people feel good in a coloured place and lighted place. Always these two components were important in architecture, because they give shape to construct. As Bruno Taut said “The eye lives from light; light is our means of satisfying the visual sense in buildings, and light leads us with a natural inevitability directly towards colour; for colour is light”. Then the colour get converted a fundamental factor in the human experience of urban spaces.

At the end we analyse the economic questions and how the economy can be related with architecture items. The urban project is affected by a lot of aspect that concern the human, in fact are lots the contaminations that can generate an elaborate architectural project of an area. Certainly, the architecture cab be changing the urban dynamics and can improve his economy.

The current urban project are frequently project of smart cities, that closing the urban spaces to man. These projects are characterised by a strong technological component: the town that can be used by phone. The principal character of this projects is the concept of sharing; all people should share the resource, the spaces, the mobility, in order that the town became a better place to live. The urban space appears as a network, a connexion of viability, mobility and spaces were the people can live the town, the public areas like a home. The point is this: at the end the urban spaces is getting better and it will be possible only with a multidisciplinary approach. A network of actors that work together, expert workers and users that find an interdisciplinary way to make better the urban spaces. We live in a world of tricky social problems with multiple and interconnected causes. They require multiple interventions from multiple disciplines. A multidisciplinary approach means drawing from multiple disciplines to redefine problems and reach solutions based on a new understanding of complex problems. By bringing different perspectives and experiences to the table, we can generate better solutions with better understanding. Together, we can optimise our ability to see every possible solution. Multidisciplinary design is all about collaboration, being curious and adaptive, combining methods and creating new ones.

In conclusion the architect’s role is not just a painter, but he must step into shoes of actors, people that live the town, and he should create a connection with other experts with a view to define a complete project to improve the urban quality.
