The geometry of multidisciplinarity
giulia zuffi
The point can thus generate artistic processes that increase geometrically in intensity.
The geometric point is an invisible entity. It must also be called an intangible entity. From a material point of view, the point equals zero. In this zero, however, various "human" properties are hidden. To our eyes, this zero point - the geometric point - is associated with the maximum conciseness, the maximum reserve, which nonetheless speaks. Thus the geometric point becomes the supreme union of silence and words.
(Vasilij Vasilevic Kandinskij - Point, line, surface, 1973)
For me, multidisciplinarity is summarized in this concept. In this essay Kandinsky tries to found a rigorous science of art; that is, an artist should rely on the mathematisation of his work. But this mathematisation does not allow us to read underneath it which are the actual operations that carry out this process. More than the project of an exact science, what still today strikes us in his works is the sketch of a metaphysics of the form elaborated by the artist. For Kandinsky, the form, natural or artificial, is the signifying manifestation of a reality. It is the tension of forces, and can only be understood in relation to its invisible background, its hidden nature, its point, its zero.
I think we are all that point, the zero.
Kandinsky describes this zero as the entity that hides various human properties within itself, which to me means that it is up to ourselves to decide which property to enhance and decide to refine it with respect to the perspective we want to defend. From an abstract point of view the point represents "the supreme and unique union between silence and word"; for example, you could think about your condition at the beginning of a design process; we have before us a blank sheet of paper, a general condition of confusion and inability to take a direction and make a choice, similar to the condition of silence and emptiness. The next step is represented by the first point that we trace on the sheet, a sign which thus becomes the point of union with the first word or trace, and which puts the design process in motion. The point can thus generate artistic processes that increase geometrically in intensity. You may wonder what all this has to do with it, but it is Kandinsky himself that laid the foundations of my discipline.
My name is Giulia Zuffi and I am a Visual Designer.
There many commonplaces concerning the Design discipline and the first is “oh, you are a designer! Then you could design my house!” No! That is not it. Design is something that contains basically everything, because "design" means “to plan”. For me, therefore, multidisciplinarity is a reality that I live every day and it is represented by a team of people with different qualifications and their own point of view, which then gives shape to a project. I chose to specialize in Visual and Multimedia Communication Design because I love the advertisement sector, but I soon realized that it was too vague for me to only deal with advertising. Anything could be advertised. Thus, I also understood that I like to help people and hope for a better future. I have been working with TWM Factory for a few months, and yet it has made me rediscover myself more than I have done in 26 years of my life. TWM Factory is a cultural association made up of young under-30 professionals. It aims at giving value to our generation and reaching out to entities with broad perspectives and talent that can make a difference in terms of innovation in the creative industry. The TWM Factory team works in a multidisciplinary way, where professional roles are mixed and force team members to collaborate together, to communicate, and to enrich and complete each other. The simple parts, the zeros, create a complex structure that moves, in continuous evolution. But evolution can only depend on a renewed knowledge, on the discovery of the new and the continuous comparison with others, with people who, even if they do not have your same role, can have ideas to share, to take care of and to grow.
As a young under-30 professional in Europe, I realize how important it is, especially now, to discover, to know and open up to novelties, to share ideas and projects, to establish new social relationships also overseas, to learn to renew yourself every day and to continue thus a continuous creative and innovative process.
